Dogs have a major religious significance among the Hindus in Nepal and in India, they are worshipped as a part of a five-day Tihar festival that is held every year. In Hinduism it is believed that dogs guard the doors of heaven and hell. The dogs at the festival are worshipped by applying tika (the holy vermilion dot), incense sticks and garlanded generally with marigold flower.
