Camping with a Dog

Spending time together outdoors is probably the best thing you can do with your dog. Camping together is even greater experience, as you both can learn so much from it. When taking your beloved friend camping, it is important to be prepared for everything, so I have prepared a Camping Checklist for camping with dogs.
Bongo in Camp Lazar, Kobarid (Slovenia)
Here is Bongo's Camping Checklist of the things you will need if you are going camping with your dog (or dogs, for those who have more than one:))

1. HARNESS/COLLAR AND LEASH
A strong leash attached to quality collar or harness. I personally prefer harness as it makes Bongo more secure in unknown situations. It is wise to bring an extra pair of leash and collar/harness with you in case you may need the second one.

2. LONG LEASH (10 METERS LONG)
A long leash is good for the time you are spending at the campsite. You can tie your dog to either a stake tree on some other strong object which will give the dog more freedom to explore the surroundings of the campsite.

3. DOG BED
Your dog's favorite bed will help the pup in excepting the new territory. It will also make him feel more cosy while sleeping somewhere, that is not home.

4. FOOD, WATER AND THE DISHES
An obvious requirement, but make sure that you have enough food and fresh water for your dog, bringing some extra is always a plus as you never know what might happen when you least expect it.

5. POOP BAGS
A must have in every dog owners life, so do not forget to clean what your pup lefts behind.

6. TREATS
Do not forget treats that are necessary to get your dogs attention in critical situations and to reward him when doing things right.

7. TOWEL
A towel if your dog decides to go swimming in the water! Even if you think you won't need it, you will be happy to have it with you.

8. TOYS
Dogs like their fun toys so make sure you are bringing your dog's favorite toys with you. Toys are great to prevent dogs from boredom and they also add something familiar to the camping environment.

9. BRUSH
Your dog will most likely get a little dirty on the trip, so make sure you will bring his brush with you!

10. FIRST AID
Physiological solution, anti parasite medications/preventions, antiseptic wipes, nail clippers and other things your dog may need.

11. SUNSHADE
If you are traveling in summer make sure you have something to make shade for your dog.

While you are on your camping trip do not forget to spend some quality time with your dog, make sure to take time for game, tricks and some obedience training. Keep your dog entertained so he won't be bored and try to show him new things. If you are going on hiking trips do not forget to bring enough water with you and be sure to take trails that are appropriate for you and your dog!

This year was Bongo's first camping experience, as we stayed at the campsite in Kobarid for four days. Here is Bongo doing some tricks at the campsite:

His bed made him sleep like a baby, he didn't mind he was sleeping in the tent :) He was also using it through the day, outside the tent, when we were staying at the campsite.

Bongo also handled some more demanding paths, he got a lot of treats after crossing the footbridge over the Soča river.

He liked the comfort of his bed after a long day of activities. It really made him feel more homely.

Bongo really enjoyed our camping trip, so I am sure we are going on another one real soon. The only thing we have to wait for is some sun, because I really wouldn't go camping in bad weather :)
